Shumway is a small village located in Effingham County, Illinois, United States. It has a population of approximately 200 people and covers an area of just over half a square mile. The village was established in 1875 and was originally known as St. Omer. The name was later changed to Shumway in honor of William E. Shumway, who was a prominent citizen of the area at the time. Shumway is located near to the Kaskaskia River, and the village is surrounded by fertile farmland. It is primarily a residential community, although there are a few small businesses located in the area. The village hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration, which includes a parade and carnival.
